August 2, 2023 – It was a race-winning weekend for Team Benik at the Superkarts! USA (SKUSA) Pro Tour SummerNationals as Marco Romero scored the round five victory in the Mini Swift class as the Florida-based program earned one pole position, one victory, three top-ten results, and a lockout of the front row in round six qualifying taking the top two positions. Additionally, Marco Romero was named the 2023 SKUSA Pro Tour Mini Swift Vice Champion.
It was Marco Romero who led the Team Benik trio on the results sheet on Saturday as he was able to convert his 13th-place qualifying result into a fourth-place finish and outside row two starting spot for the main event. Taking control in the day’s final, Romero was able to flex his muscles and show his speed driving to another SKUSA Pro Tour victory. Chasing him to the finish line was Royce Vega who earned the team’s best result in qualifying with a P10 effort, before falling to 16th in the prefinal. A spirited drive in the main event saw Vega gain 12 positions as he finished fourth in the final, narrowly missing the podium. Troy Ferguson showed promise in the prefinal moving forward eight positions from his 15th place qualifying effort but an issue in the main event relegated him down the running order.
Back to the track Sunday, it was a Team Benik front row lockout in qualifying as Troy Ferguson showed his true potential earning the Mini Swift pole position with Royce Vega lining up next to him with the second fastest lap of the session. Saturday’s race winner Romero would begin his quest on back-to-back race wins from 12th on the grid. Ferguson and Vega continued their presence at the pointy end of the grid with fourth and fifth-place results in the prefinal while Romero fell outside the top-20. Royce Vega would lead Team Benik in the main event with a sixth-place result.
In the Micro Swift category, it was Wynn Godschalk who progressed through the weekend. Earning his best result in Sunday’s main event, Godschalk took the weekend to gain experience and knowledge for future events.
“Congrats to all the Team Benik drivers,” expressed Nick Mitchell. “New Castle is a tough track as the draft plays a major role in the outcome. It was good to be at the front of the field for much of the weekend and leave with some hardware.”
